Directions to Beedon Bassett, Beedon Common

General Information

We live at Beedon Bassett, Beedon Common. Beedon Common is between Chieveley and Peasemore. As such the property is NOT that close to Beedon, and there is no direct vehicular access from Beedon. DO NOT just follow signs to Beedon. The property is accessed via a no-through byway which comes off the Chieveley to Peasemore road. The unnamed byway is metalled, and when the byway goes straight on and becomes an impassable green lane, the road bears right and disintegrates into a gravelled private road, and looks unlikely to be the correct road, but is. The property, Beedon Bassett, is the first property on the right as you come into the cluster of houses that is on Beedon Common. The house name “Beedon Bassett” is on an oval stainless steel sign on the fencing to the right of the gates at the entrance to the property.

From the A34 heading South

After Didcot take the 3rd exit off the A34 SP Beedon & Chieveley (it is after West and East Ilsley). Drive through the village of Beedon and continue on the wide open road (a very long and profitable 30-limit – watch out!) into World’s End. Turn right just after the 2nd pub (the Langley Inn -- currently sadly closed (March 2015)) along Old Street, SP Peasemore & Beedon Common. Go past the sign “Beedon Common” to the T-junction at the end of this road. Turn right, SP Peasemore (the sign is to the right at the junction, not opposite it). After a few hundred yards, turn right into the no through road marked as a byway and fingerposted to Beedon Common. Beedon Bassett is the first house on the right (see General Information).

From the A34 heading North

As the A34 approaches the M4 motorway, head off the A34 down to the “old” A34/M4 roundabout, signposted M4 Eastbound and Westbound, and also Chieveley. Do NOT follow directions for the A34 northbound to Oxford. On the old roundabout proceed straight across only NOW following direction for A34 northbound to Oxford, as if to re-join the “new” A34; but ensure you are in the near-side lane on the exit of the roundabout, and BEFORE you re-join the “new” A34, take the first exit off the “old” A34 which is ca. 100 yards north of the M4 roundabout. At the top of the slip road turn left towards Chieveley and then immediately right on Oxford Road towards Beedon. Take the second left called Downend Road SP Downend & Chieveley and drive into Downend past the sign “Chieveley” (Downend is part of Chieveley). In Downend take the first right which is at the small green triangle SP Peasemore. The road is called Northfields. Continue out on this road around one mile into the countryside past a couple of farms and other buildings, and take the 2nd right turning into the no through road marked as a byway and fingerposted to Beedon Common. Beedon Bassett is the first house on the right (see General Information).

From the M4

Come off the M4 at junction 13 (A34 Newbury & Oxford turn-off, also Chieveley Services). Head north on the “old” A34 towards Oxford. Ensure you are in the near-side lane on the exit of the roundabout, and BEFORE you re-join the “new” A34, take the first exit off the “old” A34 which is ca.

From Chaddleworth

Head out up past the school towards Leckhampstead. Go through Thicket and left past the green at Leckhampstead and down Egypt hill. Turn right onto the B4494 towards Newbury. Take the first turning on the left towards Hill Green and Peasemore. Take the first right (i.e. before getting to Peasemore) and continue along this lane until the T-junction at the end. Turn right. Take the first left turning, which is on a sharp right-hand bend, into the no through road marked as a byway and fingerposted to Beedon Common. Beedon Bassett is the first house on the right (see General Information).

Maps: Please note the maps do NOT show the new M4/J13 roundabout bypass on the A34 yet, so are out of date, but vaguely useful nevertheless…
